Everyone experiences stress from time to time.  If left unchecked, stress can lead to health problems such as anxiety, depression, and heart attacks among other ailments.  In celebration of National Stress Awareness Month, take steps this month to reduce stress so you can feel your best!

  1. Decide to get healthy.  Taking control of your health can impact the level of stress you experience. Improve your food choices and add an exercise routine to your day.  Even 30 minutes of brisk walking each day combined with a healthier diet will make you feel so much better!
  2. Laugh!!  Laughter truly is good for you.  In fact, laughter has been known to lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormones, and increase alertness and creativity.  So, laugh away!  It really is the best medicine!
  3. Write it down. No matter what obstacles you face each day, do your best to put a positive spin on them.  At the end of the day, take a few minutes to list 2 or 3 things about that specific day that made you happy.  Keep the lists in a journal so you can go back and read them.  Reflecting on positive moments in your life are sure to reduce stress and bring a smile to your face!

Clams with Smoky Bacon and Tomatoes

Clams with Smoky Bacon and Tomatoes

Ingredients

  • 6 slices apple wood-smoked bacon, cut crosswise into 1/3-inch-wide strips
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, pressed
  • 1 28-ounce can diced tomatoes in juice
  • 1/2 cup chopped drained roasted red bell peppers from jar
  • 6 pounds littleneck clams, scrubbed
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons chopped fresh Italian parsley

Directions

  • Heat large pot over medium-high heat.
  • Add bacon and onion.
  • Sauté until bacon is crisp around edges and onion starts to brown, stirring, about 8 minutes.
  • Add garlic. Stir 1 minute.
  • Add tomatoes with juice and peppers. Bring to boil, scraping up browned bits.
  • Add clams, cover, and boil until clams open, stirring occasionally, 8 to 10 minutes (discard any clams that do not open).
  • Stir in 1/4 cup parsley.
  • Divide among shallow bowls. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons parsley.

Serve with buttered (low-fat and heart-healthy, of course!) wheat linguine and side salad for a unique and tasty meal.

Eyelash extensions are enhancements applied to the natural eyelashes to increase volume and length in an effort to emphasize the eyes. 
Here are some things to keep in mind when exploring lash extensions.
The lash extension application process takes about 45 minutes to two hours, depending on the look you want to achieve. The procedure is painless and lash extensions last approximately three to four weeks. 
You’ll have beautiful, full lashes without mascara! In fact, some women feel they need less makeup altogether when wearing extensions.

One of the biggest myths is that lash extensions damage your natural lashes. This is, in fact, a myth. When applied correctly and properly cared for, they are safe and your natural lashes will stay healthy.

Keep in mind, your beautiful lashes will require maintenance. Most women require touch-ups every two to four weeks.

A word of caution…some people may experience sensitivity or an allergic reaction to the adhesive used to attach the lashes, which generally requires removal. That is why you have to be careful who you go to for this procedure.

Also, DO NOT use waterproof mascara because it is difficult to remove and can damage your extensions. And be sure not to rub your eyes or pull on the extensions because this can lead to loss of lashes and damage your natural lashes.

Other Options: Lash enhancement serums such as RevitaLash and Latisse are additional options for longer, fuller lashes. These products have been known to cause brown pigmentation of the eye as well as other bothersome side effects to some people. However, many women do very well with these serums. They do not provide immediate enhancement, but increased length and fullness is noticeable over time.

The Verdict: While eyelash extensions may not work for everyone, they are certainly the ideal choice for today’s busy woman who wants to look fabulous without the hassle. When correctly applied and properly cared for, lash extensions are effortless as well as beautiful! They provide that extra special touch for a special night out, but accentuate your natural beauty when you are at the beach or relaxing at home.

Healthy Holiday Party Tips

The holidays are such a festive, fun time of year! We get to spend time with friends and family, shop our cares away and attend all of those holiday parties.  Whether it’s the office party or a gathering at a neighbor’s house, parties are in full swing during the holidays.  And so are the food and drinks! This can cause anxiety for even the healthiest eaters.  But, it doesn’t have to!  Try these helpful tips to enjoy the festivities in a healthy and safe way.

Don’t arrive hungry.  Enjoy a small, healthy snack of nuts, cheese, and fruit, such as an apple or grapes, before the party. You want to arrive to the party satisfied, not starving and eyeing the buffet table as soon as you walk through the door.

Easy does it on the alcohol.  Loading up on alcoholic beverages is a recipe for disaster.  You know that tasty, holiday drinks can be loaded with alcohol and calories.  And isn’t it fun to pair them up with some “carby” snacks?  Don’t fall into that trap!  You’ve heard the saying, “Everything in moderation.”  This would be the time to put that into practice.

Also, keep in mind….your alcohol intake and behavior at a business party must be more composed versus that of a friend’s party. Remember the infamous Elaine dance on that hilarious episode of Seinfeld?  Elaine is the life of the party as she performs her “dry heave dance” all night long at a business party.  Needless to say, she is mocked and whispered about in the office for the following weeks.  Don’t be Elaine!  Keep your behavior in check.

Sip on your cocktails instead of gulping them down. Try drinking water after an alcoholic beverage to fill you up and lessen the effects of the alcohol.  And, most importantly…make sure you have someone designated to get you home safely.

Look for the fruit and vegetable trays. Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of nutrients, high in fiber, low in calories, and a delicious snack.  If you’re really hungry, consume those first.

Stay away from dips and spreads.  Fruits and veggies are a healthy choice until you dip them in caramel sauce or the specialty dip of the night.  Don’t undo the positive decisions you’ve made up until this point.  Stick to it.  You can do it!

Holiday festivities can be lots of fun.  But, it doesn’t mean we should make unhealthy choices.  It’s easy to overindulge at parties only to wake up with regrets the next morning.  However, if you plan carefully, and make wise choices, you can have fun at your party and feel great the next day.

Ladies, obtaining the perfect outfit is your first priority.  First, make a mental note of all the events you will attend.  Are you celebrating with co-workers, friends, or both?  Keep in mind, your dress at an office party should definitely be more conservative than that of a party with friends and family.

The popular little black dress is always a safe bet.  You can accessorize to fit the occasion! Dress it up with sexy heels, earrings, a necklace, etc., or add a pop of color with a silky, red scarf, red lips and red nails.   Or, downplay it a bit for that business party with modest heels and jewelry, and neutral makeup and nail tones.  It depends on the statement you want to make.
